Abstract

In the first three chapters the life of Grundtvig (1738-1872) is traced in its relation to contemporary events and developments in the life of his people, and their mutual influence upon one another is indicated. Chapter IV deals in more detail with various aspects of Grundtvig's many-sided activity, particularly those which throw light on the philosophy underlying his educational theories. In chapter V an attempt is made to give a systematic account of those theories, illustrated by quotations from the writings of Grundtvig, while chapter VI gives a brief sketch of the contemporary educational conditions in Europe which formed a setting for his work. Chapter vii traces the development of his educational ideas, as indicated in his writings, while his relation to other European educators is discussed in chapter VIII. Chapters IX and X have for their subject the history of the early Folk High-Schools (1844-64) and of Askov, the "High-School University", while in chapter XI the growth of the High-Schools after 1864 is described, and recent statistics are quoted; and in chapter XII the place of the High-Schools in the life of Denmark to-day is discussed. Chapter XIII contains a brief survey of the spread of the High-School Movement outside Denmark, with special reference to the recent establishment of Coleg Harlech in Wales; and in the concluding chapter an attempt is made to estimate the significance if the contribution of the Folk High-Schools to modern educational thought. A bibliography is appended.
