Research interests

Shubin’s Ser Cymru II COFUND fellowship aims to improve the conceptual understanding and quantification of soil C stores and soil-atmosphere exchanges of CO2 in drylands. In the research, he is interested in i) identifying the species and determining the sensitivity of the photosynthetic activity of soil biocrust microbes to climatic and environmental stress; ii) tracing the pathways of biocrust sequestered C to determine fate and residence times, and iii) investigating interactions between C produced in biocrusts with the soil mineral fraction, particularly carbonates.

Shubin Lan is a graduate of Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he received his Ph.D. in environmental science. His doctoral research looked at biological soil crust development, succession and relative ecological and physiological characteristics in the Dalate Banner (the eastern edge of the Qbuqi Desert) and Shapotou (the southern edge of the Tengger Desert) regions of China. He has held an innovation research position at Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he was made Associate Professor in 2015, and a Youth Innovation Promotion Association member (CAS) in 2016. Now, he is a Ser Cymru II Fellow in Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University.
